South-Eastern France Geography 101
The Setting is Where the Maritime French Alps Meet the Sea
For those of you who may have never been to France, much less to the French Riviera, Cap Ferrat, where the village of Saint Jean is located, is the "crème de la crème" of the south of France. It is located 580 miles southeast of Paris. Yes, France is big, really big. It is basically a 600 mile hexagon from north to south, northwest to southeast and northeast to southwest and east to west. In square miles, it is about the same size as the Lone Star State, Texas.

France is a 600 mile per side pentagon

The French countryside from Paris to Nice is charming.  However, it is a little too far for a relaxed one-day drive unless you want to use the high-speed freeways all the way.  Regardless of how one arrives at the French Riviera, the French Maritime Alps dominate the northern horizon.  It is rugged inland territrory.  In the map portrayal above - if its red - it is rugged.

The French Riviera Terrain
In the small section of the French Riviera represented in this 3-D portrayal, one can see the result of the tectonic forces of the Maritime Alps.  The small projection of the 3200 meter length of Cap Ferrat is clearly visible.
